Chinese Rugs – Brilliant colors, designs and flowers create a work of art

Among the most well known Chinese rugs are the antique art deco rugs from the early 20th century. These beautiful antique rugs traditionally have a brightly colored field, largely open with a border of another bright contrasting color. Imposed on the border and field of these handmade carpets are vines, flowers, and hanging baskets. Some rugs have border designs that are frame-like with many small, softly colored flowers. The fine quality of these antique Oriental carpets is shown in their construction.

Carpets from China are different from the rugs woven in regions of Persia and the Caucasus. The Chinese concept is of an open field that does not have to be filled with designs such as in Persian carpets. These hand knotted rugs are art forms in a balanced and elegant layout. One form of design is the traditional medallion, with a center medallion and one on each corner of the carpet. These medallions are of flowers, animals, and birds in a usually round shape without edges. While antique Persian rugs are mainly red in color, rugs made in China are predominantly yellow and blue, the colors of earth and sky. Carpet colors used also include white, light red, brown and black. The art of mixing colors provides the Chinese craftsman with beautiful combinations of different shades of yellow, or pink and salmon. Carpet size tends to be in an elongated rectangle.

Another collection of rugs from China are the Ningxia, which are antique pile rugs of an excellent quality, woven of fine wool. They are usually yellow or brown with blue designs which are medallions or dragons and other symbols. Included in the symbols woven into a Chinese rug are the wheel, dragons, Fo-dogs, the lotus flower, fish and the endless knot, all of which have meaning.
