Penny Rugs - Wool creations for walls and floors

Penny rugs along with latch hook rugs are among the most popular of handmade wool rugs in America.  Stitchers and craftsmen date the beginning of penny rugs to the early part of the 19th century.  These rugs, as they are called, were primarily made for use on tables and walls rather than floors.  They were constructed by using large coins as templates to cut out pieces of wool, which were then appliquéd in up to three layers to form patterns, designs and pictures.  Latch hook rugs were made by using small pieces of yarn and pulling them through a canvas to make loop designs.

Penny rugs were also used on table tops.  The pieces of wool were cut in natural forms such as flowers, animals and birds and then appliquéd together.  The wool was first preshrunk or felted and then cut.  The circles were joined by either a buttonhole or blanket stitch and tongue shaped pieces were put around the edge for finishing.  These wool rugs are difficult to find ready-made but patterns are available along with small wool pieces for making them yourself.  The same is true with latch hook rugs, which are extremely popular in kit form.  Patterns resembling fine Persian rug designs are intricate and beautiful.

Searching online is fun for hooked rugs, penny rugs and latch hook rugs.
