Throw rugs are for throwing---in the entry hall, or the kitchen, or the bath, or maybe even over a chair or the bed. It's funny that we used to call them scatter rugs, which I guess meant that we scattered them about. Now they are much better known as throw rugs. Some of the light weight ones are just called throws, and definitely need a thin non-slip pad, but the ones that are used as floor rugs are generally a bit heavier and sometimes backed with latex.

Throw rugs are great in the entry hall where Oriental or Persian patterns are wonderful to fill the space. Small sisal ones are really good in this space which receives a lot of traffic. Soft braided and chenille styles make good floor rugs for the bedroom. Chenille is also popular in lighter weight throws that are more for the bed or chair.

Soft, fleecy throw rugs feel good

Flokati and sheepskin are great throw rugs, and similar in appearance and feel, since they are both wool fleece. We have looked at these varieties so much for beside the bed or in front of the sofa, where you can sink your feet into them. Sheepskin is not only for floor rugs, though, as it is great for throws on a chair or for baby's play.

There are also good looking handmade hemp throw rugs with tassels on the ends like fringe. These durable coverings soften as they are used and become more enjoyable as time goes by. Natural fiber floor rugs come in different colors as the hemp is dyed using naturally grown plants for the dye.

Throw rugs made from olefin fiber have the luxurious feel of wool, but they are static free and value priced. They resist soil, stains and fading and are non-allergic.

There are also lots of throw rugs for children's rooms and the kitchen that have cute themes, such as flowers, animals, or educational designs. We saw wonderful styles for the kitchen. One was a sleeping cat; another was a big fat hen. Small floor coverings definitely have many uses, and there is no shortage of them when shopping online.
