July 16, 2004 Flokati Rugs - Elegant shaggy wool rugs from GreeceFlokati rugs are wonderful shaggy rugs made from tufts of wool woven into a 100% wool base. They are similar to a sheepskin rug in appearance. Authentic Flokati rugs are hand woven in Greece. To be certified as a flokati rug, it also must have at least 1800 grams of wool per square meter, as prescribed by law of the Greek Parliament. A true flokati rug is made from the finest New Zealand wool and the tufts are washed in water to make the pile fluffy. Flokati rugs have been woven by villagers in the mountain regions of Greece for over 1500 years. Sheepskin had been used for warmth and protection against the elements. The villagers began taking the wool from the sheepskin, making deep pile by flocking it, and then weaving it with wool warp and weft. In English, the word 'flocus' means a long tuft of wool or hair. So instead of a sheepskin rug, which required the skin of an animal, the wool from the sheep was used to weave a flokati rug. Flokati rugs have achieved so much popularity over the last 30 years, there are many rugs being made today that are not certified as a genuine flokati rug. Some are sold by the total weight of the rug, rather than the grams per square meter. Also, there are some that are machine made which are not authentic. There are also some that are similar to flokati rugs, which are called floco rugs. These do not have the required grams of weight and are woven on a polymer backing instead of wool. If you are looking for a flokati rug, take time to check the weight in grams as well as whether or not the backing is wool or poly and if it was made in Greece.
