Casual Sisal Rugs - best choice for contemporary living

Sisal rugs have become very popular in the last few years, adding style to contemporary homes and offices.  These floor coverings can be installed as carpet, stair runners and area rugs.  Sisal rugs are great looking when finished with a border to coordinate with furnishings.  They make a handsome addition to most any room.

The fiber that is used to make sisal rugs comes from the agave plant, which is grown in Central America, Indonesia and Africa.  This plant was discovered in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The port from which it was shipped was Sisal, and that is the reason it is called sisal.  The leaves of the plant are 2 to 4 feet long and after they are crushed, the pulp covering is stripped away from the long fibers, which usually white or light yellow.

The durability of this fiber makes it ideal for weaving rugs and carpets.  It can be woven into a variety of patterns, and often combined with wool to provide a softer rug.  Sisal rugs are long wearing, fire-resistant and insulating.  They help control humidity because of their moisture absorbency quality, however, must not be washed or used outside because the fiber will deteriorate.  Spills should be quickly wiped off and dried with a hair-dryer, if possible.

In addition to sisal rugs, jute rugs are also a thrifty choice for modern homes.  The most familiar use of jute is burlap bags, however, it is also used for jute rugs, which are soft to the touch, although not as durable as sisal.  They make a good, inexpensive floor covering for a bedroom, but are not recommended for areas of heavy traffic.

Neat and smart looking, sisal rugs are an excellent idea if you are just starting out, or redecorating your home.
