May 31, 2004 Navajo Rugs have the flavor of native AmericaNavajo rugs made in the style of the Navajo Nation are a delight for any home. Original rugs are woven by the women of the Indian reservation located in New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. This is the largest of reservations and covers some 25,000 miles. Navajo rugs have been created in the tradition of the southwest and are designed in similar patterns to the hand woven ones, making southwestern rugs among the most popular styles. In some of the larger cities of the southwest, such as Denver, hand made Navajo rugs can cost as much as ten thousand dollars. However, the style of these southwestern rugs can be found in commercial markets and are much less expensive. Navajo rugs have symmetrical designs depicting nature and the landscape of the rugged southwest. Colors in these southwestern rugs are natural, and usually came from such things as walnuts, which produced a deep brown. The black and white came from black and white sheep. The wool was sheared by hand, carded and washed, then spun and wrapped in preparation for weaving. Aniline dyes were introduced to the Navajos in the late 1800's and the brighter colors made the rugs come into their own. Today it is possible to buy Navajo rugs that are beautiful, but less costly since they are made commercially. They are woven of 100% wool and these southwestern rugs are designed to complement ranch style and southwestern decor.
