May 20, 2004 Tibetan Rugs - Eastern influence for modern livingTibetan rugs have been used in homes in Tibet for over 900 years. Tibet is the area of China where these rugs were woven by hand for centuries. The simple designs of the modern rugs are now mostly made in Nepal, the small country between China and India, where thousands of refugees fled in 1959-60. Many of these people were experienced weavers and the weaving of Tibetan rugs is now the largest industry in the country. The tiger was the symbol of power in Tibetan culture and many of these rugs, just known as tiger rugs, display a motif of a tiger skin. Dragons are also used in Tibetan rugs. Fine Swiss dyes are used in many of the rugs, but natural undyed wool, as well as vegetable dyes are used. Medallions, floral patterns and animal patterns can be found in these modern rugs. Excellent quality wool from China is used for these Tibetan rugs. The colors of burnt orange, yellow ochre, pale green and raw umber are still used for the traditional designs, creating modern rugs for today. Modern rugs with this Chinese influence are available from several sources. Hand woven Tibetan rugs in a variety of colors and designs can be found online. This tradition is as modern today as it was centuries ago.
